Why the 28th in America?
- The fast ends at moonrise, so Karva Chauth is kept on the day Kartik Krishna Chaturthi is still in force when the moon rises.
- Chaturthi begins and ends at the same instant everywhere on Earth. Moonrise does not: every city sees it at its own time.
- In India, moonrise on the 29th falls inside Chaturthi. In New York and Toronto, Chaturthi is over before the moon rises on the 29th, so there the fast is on the 28th.
